Lucy Powell, the Labour Party’s deputy leader, has reaffirmed her trust in UK police procedures following President Donald Trump’s criticism of the decision to grant bail to individuals suspected of plotting attacks at RAF Fairford. The comments come as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also voiced concerns, asserting that a foreign actor was clearly behind the suspected conspiracy.
Police counter-terrorism units continue to maintain a cordon around three vans being examined near the air base, two days after the initial incident. Approximately 85 residents who were evacuated from homes near the facility were permitted to return on Monday. Newswires have released recent images from the scene.
RAF Fairford serves as the European headquarters for US air force bombers, effectively operating as an American military asset on British soil. The base has been utilized by the United States for bombing campaigns against Iran, following former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s agreement to permit American strikes on Iranian missile launch sites during the conflict initiated by Trump in the spring.
Tehran has previously demonstrated explicit interest in the base. On July 23, during the thirteenth day of consecutive US bombing attacks, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement declaring that any bases used by the US to attack Iran, including Fairford, constituted “legitimate targets.”
