A newly released report from the United Nations has cautioned that the opportunity to rehabilitate forests—critical for ensuring food security and resilience against climate change—is rapidly closing. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is calling on national governments to elevate forest restoration to a top-tier policy priority.
According to the world body, more than 489 million hectares, equivalent to approximately 1.2 billion acres, of forests have been cleared since 1990. The situation is compounded by an even larger expanse of forest land that has suffered degradation, further undermining ecosystems vital to the global climate.
The FAO emphasized that immediate and coordinated government action is essential to reverse these trends and safeguard the environmental functions that healthy forests provide.
