Argentina’s President Javier Milei has issued a stark warning to the United Kingdom, demanding the cessation of oil exploration activities near the Falkland Islands or risk facing international legal proceedings. The ultimatum was announced via social media, giving British authorities a 14-day window to halt the Sea Lion oilfield project.
The proposed extraction initiative is a collaborative effort between British firm Rockhopper Exploration and Israeli company Navitas Petroleum. Both corporations maintain that they hold valid licensing agreements issued by the Falkland Islands government and intend to commence operations within the next two years. The Sea Lion field, located approximately 130 miles from the archipelago, is estimated to contain 1.7 billion barrels of oil.
President Milei stated that if the deadline passes without the project being scrapped, he has directed his Foreign Ministry and legal teams to pursue international arbitration. He further indicated that Argentina could take the dispute to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, citing what he described as the illegal plundering of regional resources.
The development significantly escalates tensions regarding the sovereignty of the territory, which Argentina refers to as Las Malvinas. The dispute dates back to the 1982 conflict, during which a British military task force defeated Argentine forces after a 74-day war that resulted in the deaths of 255 British and 649 Argentine military personnel, alongside three islanders. In a 2013 referendum, the island’s residents voted overwhelmingly, with 99.8% in favor, to remain a British overseas territory.
Milei’s comments follow recent rhetoric directed at the United Nations. During a speech at the General Assembly, he criticized the global body for its inaction on the sovereignty issue, labeling it a “useless organisation” populated by “arrogant parasites.” In response to the heightened threats, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting asserted that Argentina currently lacks the military capability to reclaim the islands by force.
