Legendary musician and producer Todd Rundgren has issued a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, labeling the global pop star as “the apotheosis of mediocrity” and asserting that she has “ruined music.” The comments surfaced in a recent interview with Vulture, where the “Hello It’s Me” singer opened up about the current state of the music industry.
Rundgren revealed that if he were asked to produce an album satirizing a contemporary artist, Swift would be his primary target. He drew parallels to his work with Meat Loaf’s 1977 album “Bat Out of Hell,” noting that he similarly produced that record without concern for commercial success because his goal was to mock Bruce Springsteen.
“To me, Taylor Swift is the apotheosis of mediocrity,” Rundgren stated. “It’s the era of the female artists.” When pressed on why female musicians currently dominate the biggest spots in the industry, he attributed the shift to the rise of video games.
Rundgren argued that in the 1990s, male audiences began redirecting their spending from music to video games. According to the producer, record labels then pivoted to target young girls, who had their own allowances. “Why don’t we start making music for young girls instead of Pearl Jam or something like that?” he suggested.
These remarks follow Swift’s latest musical milestone with the release of “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.” The deluxe edition of her 2025 album recently broke two Spotify records. Her track “Patient Zero” set the record for the most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day so far this year, while Swift also secured the top spot for most daily streams by a female artist in 2026.
Swift’s commercial dominance was further recognized at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where she received the inaugural Artist-Director Award.
