Apple Releases iOS 27.0.1 to Address iPhone 18 Pro Freezing and Restart Glitches

Apple has launched iOS 27.0.1, its first software patch for the latest mobile operating system, aimed at resolving persistent stability issues affecting the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Released on Monday, the update targets a specific bug that causes these devices to freeze or unexpectedly restart, a problem that frequently arises when users attempt to authenticate via Face ID.

The issue typically manifests when unlocking secured applications, such as the Passwords app or private Safari tabs. According to research cited by 9to5Mac, the glitch is triggered after an initial Face ID failure; tapping the “Try Face ID Again” prompt can cause the device to lock up and reboot seconds later. The exact root cause of the Face ID malfunction has not been disclosed by Apple.

Potential hardware architecture differences may explain why only the newest Pro models are impacted. Unlike previous generations where the TrueDepth camera resides within the Dynamic Island, the iPhone 18 series features an under-display Face ID sensor positioned to the left of the island. Users may observe a brief white line appearing beneath the status bar time during authentication, indicating the sensor’s activity.

Beyond the primary stability fixes, iOS 27.0.1 addresses a camera anomaly affecting a subset of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units. This defect caused color artifacts in photographs taken at 2x zoom under specific lighting conditions at an f/1.48 aperture.

Additionally, the update resolves a broader compatibility issue present across all iPhones running iOS 27. The patch prevents the screen from becoming unresponsive when users attempt to open the Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously.

Apple also distributed version 27.0.1 for iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS to address unspecified bugs on tablets, computers, and headset devices. Security patches were not included in this release cycle.

The update is compatible with iPhone 11 and later models, as well as a wide range of iPads including the 12.9-inch and 11-inch Pro lines, iPad Air 4th generation and later, iPad 9th generation and later, and iPad mini 6th generation and later. To install, users should navigate to Settings, select General, and tap Software Update.

This release follows a similar pattern to last week’s WatchOS 27.0.1, which corrected random restarts on the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 linked to Neural Engine timeouts. As with any new operating system and hardware launch, early software glitches appear to be meeting timely responses from Apple’s engineering team.
