Focus Features has shared the trailer for “Elsinore,” a dramatic film directed by Simon Stone and starring Andrew Scott in a lead role. The movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 20, centers on the true story of Irish actor Ian Charleson, known for his performance in “Chariots of Fire.”
According to the official synopsis written by Stephen Beresford, the film depicts Charleson’s “deeply emotional and inspirational” journey. It portrays him facing his mortality with honesty and grace as he delivers a courageous performance that ultimately becomes a source of healing for those around him.
The narrative follows a pivotal moment in Charleson’s career when he was given the opportunity to replace Daniel Day-Lewis in the production of “Hamlet” at London’s National Theatre. Day-Lewis had abruptly left the stage and exited the production. However, despite receiving critical acclaim for his substitute role, Charleson was battling severe complications from AIDS and passed away just seven weeks after stepping down from the play.
“Elsinore” made its festival debut at Telluride before competing at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it claimed the International People’s Choice Award. Critics have responded positively to Scott’s portrayal; Owen Gleiberman of Variety described the film as an “indelible journey” and praised Scott’s “astonishingly layered and moving performance.” Clayton Davis from the same publication noted that this role places Scott at the forefront of best-actor conversations.
