Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson has revealed that playing for Rangers remains a significant aspiration of his, despite choosing to extend his tenure in Italy following summer transfer speculation.
The 27-year-old Scotland international faced uncertainty regarding his future during the off-season but ultimately decided to stay with the Serie A side. Since then, he has established himself as a vital figure at the club, serving as captain and starting every league match this season.
Reflecting on his decision-making process ahead of Scotland’s upcoming Nations League fixture against Switzerland, Ferguson admitted he spent considerable time evaluating his options. “I was a little bit unsure but nothing was ever really that close to be honest,” he said. “I had a long think about my future and what that was going to look like and, in the end, it was still at Bologna. I’ve loved every moment that I’ve had there, so it was about continuing that journey and see where it takes me.”
Ferguson, who currently holds two years on his contract, did not shy away from acknowledging his lifelong ties to Glasgow’s east-end club. He confirmed that his move to Ibrox is “always in the back of my mind” and emphasized that growing up as a Rangers supporter is “absolutely no secret.”
“My family is involved in the club, and it was an aspiration of mine, a dream of mine as a kid and that’s not changed,” he stated. However, the captain stressed his respect for his current employers, adding: “I don’t want to speak about that while I’m still a player at Bologna… in the future you never know.”
